Not down with Camp Wake Up Obama
Posted by Mickey Martin on August 17th, 2012
So I got an email yesterday from the kids at ASA bout their “Camp Wake Up Obama” plan do distribute 100,000 posters into “swing states.” The poster looks like it was designed by the Karl Rove’s Americans for Prosperity and asks the question “Can Broken Promises Lose an Election?” Yawn.
First off, the biggest problem with this strategy is that if you are attempting to undermine the re-election campaign of President Obama, then you are also promoting the alternative…which is very likely the election of Mitt Romney. So why not ask the question, “If President Obama does not step in and save my friends dispensaries should we hand the election to Mitt Romney?” Because that is what this feeble attempt is trying to do.
I am saying that we should not hold President Obama and his administration responsible in any way for the outrageous attacks on the cannabis community. I completely agree that it is our responsibility to hold his feet to the fire on this issue. But I do not think directly attempting to fuck up his re-election with no viable alternative by posting fallacious messages in swing states is a great way of going about that.
That is right. I said fallacious. I have had this argument before with folks in the community, but many of them either have a very short memory, or they have a selective interpretation of what “promise” means.  But check out my points again from May 2011:
Here is the Obama interview so many of us took for a promise on the campaign, but listen closely. He say he thinks a properly regulated system, not one where mom and pops grow in their back yard, then he thinks that is “entirely appropriate.” He says he thinks it is not a good waste of resources as confirmed in the hole-filled Ogden memo. The biggest part of the interview you fail to mention in this supposed promise is when he clearly states “I will not be spending a lot of political capital on this issue given all of the other issues we are facing.” That is pretty clear to me. In fact, I am surprised that in his first few months any White House Official or Holder would state anything. In fact, in the Holder press conference you can see him squirm a bit when asked about it.

The question is what do we gain by hanging this pork chop around Obama’s neck and influencing people to think he is a liar. A lot of folks in our community ARE issue voters. By asserting that Obama is to be held completely accountable for an issue he stated carried little weight is kind of nuts. It would seem that our best bet for reform would be in the second term of a light-skinned brother from Hawaii who admits to inhaling (and who was the leader of the Choom Gang).
I have since also grown a bit more cynical on Obama and his minions. How could I not with all that is happening to the cannabis community? But the reality is that I understand politics, also. I am not stupid enough to encourage people to vote for evil, just because I am pissed at the way the current administration has failed to protect our industry. I am not a one issue voter, although I understand many in this community are. The fact is that it is a big world, and political decisions usually never have an ideal choice. But there is a choice, nonetheless. The choice in this election, unfortunately, is between Obama, who has failed to protect us; and Romney who admits he will never protect us and who will likely make the rest of the issues facing the middle class, the poor, and our Country FAR FAR WORSE. So the old saying “Do not cut off your nose to spite your face” is very much true here. Do not elect Romney to spite Obama. That is just ignorant
    logic.
But Steph Sherer from ASA has suggested that Mitt Romney is some how as acceptable as Obama on this, or any other issue. Here is that statement from a HuffPost piece she did:
President Obama should not underestimate the power of our movement. The medical cannabis movement survived for eight years under Bush, we will survive Obama and we can certainly survive under the likes of Mitt Romney.
That is just nutso to me. I am pissed at Obama too, but not enough to shoot myself in the face over it (which is what I will likely do should Romney get elected).
I am still hopeful that Gary Johnson may get a window of opportunity to make the debates and make a real push at this thing. But, while I am an optimist and a dreamer at times, I also understand the political calculus that it would take to make that happen. While I believe in miracles, I do not put my money on them. I would not bet on a two-legged horse to win the Kentucky Derby. I would like to think that a two-legged horse could win the Kentucky Derby if the stars aligned; but I am not betting the rent money on it. While Gary Johnson is a safe vote here in California, if I lived in Ohio, Colorado, Virginia, Florida, or another close battleground states, I would not risk it. I would vote for Obama…or as I call it, NOT ROMNEY!
So I guess the question is, “What the fuck are you trying to accomplish?” From the name of your strange effort “Camp Wake Up Obama,” it would sound like you are trying to get his attention. That is great. Here is a NEWSFLASH: Threatening Obama in battleground states is likely to just piss him off instead of making him more accepting and understanding of the issue.
There are better ways to “wake up Obama” without joining the ranks of the Tea Party to do it. We, as a community, should do a better job of creating tension in areas where it could really be more effective. Posters in battleground states? That is what you guys came up with? Adding to the chaos and litter in Ohio and othe “swing states” with some posters, that at first glance, have nothing to do with medical marijuana. They just look like another Koch Brother sponsored advertisement aimed at creating distrust with Obama and souring his chance of re-election. Awesome!
The real issue is that our community continues to beat this “medical only” drum that just does not carry water. The fact is that our “medical cannabis” community failed to meet the norms of “medical” in our society for over a decade, and the Feds called bullshit on us. But instead of working to simply legalize cannabis for all adults to use as they please, medical or not- and admitting we all may not be as sick as we seem- we have decided to double down on our failures. In doing so, we now have chosen to act as if Obama’s rhetoric from the campaign trail in 2008, in which he clearly states he will not be spending political capitol on this issue, is some sort of major “broken promise” and that he is some huge liar.
That is just not my position. My position is that he is a political snake, just like the rest of them. He chose his words carefully over the years on this issue, and made sure he made no promises. We can continue to say he did, but that does not make it true. He is still beholden to the big business lobbying groups that donate to campaigns in order to win re-election. But I do think he is a WAY better choice for the world than Mitt Romney will ever be. So, be pissed at Obama if you want to, but quit campaigning for Romney to get back at him. That is just the stupidest shit I have ever heard of really. Fuck Mitt Romney.

    Mickey,
I totally agree with you. I DO NOT want the likes of Romney as President.
This is one of those lessor of two evils. I agree that seeing a sign like
that says vote Romney. ASA is a lobbying group. What the heck are they
    doing?

    The California Super Initiative
    (Joint Effort Required)

Judge Gray, Stephen Collett, and I will be at Seattle Hempfest and we have the same message to share with our fellow activists:

There is a very good chance we can pass a least one statewide voter initiative this November. If that happens, we need to all come together and create a CALIFORNIA SUPER INITIATIVE, which truly represents us all and will gain the respect and support of our major donors. Without such a consensus, our hopes for funding are greatly diminished. Given that it will take at least $3 million to win in California and that the major donors rarely give more than $1/2 million, it is clear that we have our work cut out for us. There is no limit on how many authors and proponents can be listed for a voter initiative, so everyone has much to gain and little to lose by joining together now for victory in 2014 in California.
