So what is going on this Friday in San Jose? The SaveCannabis.org
conference will have 3 main parts, an update on the Riverside (Supreme
Court Case) by Lanny Swerdlow, the definition of a "Collective" from
the B.o.E., and an open discussion about "what's next? 2014, etc.".
Each talk will be followed by a moderated open discussion.
My talk will be regarding my journey with the B.O.E. How their
attorneys provided me official legal advise stating "Under the
scenario described, since there has been no “sale” of cannabis, there
is no sales or use tax liability that occurs". I will also be
discussing the 5 other collectives who have gone before a "Board
Hearing" (ie: Berkeley Patients Group, Patients Care Collective, Marin
Alliance, Northbay Wellness Group, Bernal Heights Dispensary) and
their issues with the BOE.

informed that she would no longer be allowed to visit, no reason given.
Eddy’s wife, Linda, lives 7 hours away. The trip is expensive to make.
A few months ago the keepers in Lompoc decided that they didn’t want him
around anymore so they sent him to a federal prison outside of El Paso,
Texas, where the conditions might be considered rustic but I’d call them
crude. However, this time when Angela sent in her application to visit,
they approved. Realistically, the cost of the visit is going to be about
$1,500. In relationship to the number of people whom he helped, aided,
guided or cared for– that isn’t a lot of money. If every person who he had
a direct effect upon gave $1, there would be a giant surplus. Remember, he
had a farm and he was giving medicine away to people who needed it.
Angela said “well, let’s just ask your Facebook family—they are almost
11,000 strong and many of them know what it is like to be in prison and
have only one visitor a year, if they are lucky. Others know Eddy and this
is sure to reach people who are concerned about him. We should have no
problem raising this money.”
We have asked for donations before from people who say that they are really
concerned and would like to alleviate pain and change the law. The amount
that we have raised from these pleas is laughable. There are always a few
who understand the importance of helping but for the most part the response
is a vast reply of silence.

Here is what Eddy said about getting a visit from Angela:
*“As to why I would like you to come and see me in La Tuna—they cancelled
my entire visiting list because they said we were too close to the border
(Mexico) and that I would have to redo my entire list. So far, you [Angela]
are the only one to be approved and therefore the only one who can and will
come visit. It would be very very nice if somehow you could get the funds
to do so. I hope and pray somehow someone will come through and help you
come visit me. Sadly, I do understand how hard things are out there right
now and can only hope that the world changes for the better for all of us.*

Angela is scheduled to leave November 1 and Green Aid is reallocating funds
from the California Child Protection Services Reform Project for the trip.
Our experience has been that less than 1% of the people who actually read
this and sympathize with it are hardly going to take any action at all. The
overwhelming majority of them will say “the next person will do it, they
will raise all the money, its too much bother, I cant afford it,” and this
stasis will continue, nothing will change.
*When I am at shows or fairs, lots of people come up to me and tell me how
grateful they are that I have spent time on marijuana activism. While I
appreciate the kind thoughts, I am looking for action. It is impossible to
forget that Ten years ago I was staring down a 20-year prison sentence
myself. I am looking for dedication and I am looking for people who are
willing to proactively change the laws and to support the people who have
been challenging them. SO PROVE ME WRONG. From experience, I don’t actually
expect much from this but Angela is a lot more optimistic— prove her right.*

I am amazed at the amount of people who think that their activism begins at
the protest and ends at the end of the event. Activism is something that
puts you to sleep at the end of a long day and wakes you up early driven to
do more. Activism happens EVERYWHERE.
Often, the most effective activism you can do is in normal every day
conversations with friends, neighbors, co-workers, or even the lady in line
at the grocery store. There is always room to squeeze in a conversation
about weed and why our current weed policies in this country are absolute
failures. It is the little things in weed activism that make the wheels
turn. The reason we see the most recent tracking polls above 50%
in favor of legalizing cannabis for adults is because our society at large
is having this conversation more often and more prominently. We are seeing
a very healthy dialogue taking place in real time, where more people have
begun to find their voice on this issue.
It is no longer just Snoop Dogg out there preaching weed love. There are
crazy right winders like Pat Robertson and Tom Tancredo jumping on board.
You see Brad Pitt and Richard Branson making waves a lot on the failed drug
policies of our country. Civil Rights groups, like the NAACP, are
supporting ending the mass incarceration of mostly poor and minority folks
for weed. There is a deep, and more honest, conversation happening out
there than has ever been had in my life time. I could not be happier.
But it is up to us to continue to fuel that fire. It is up to us to take a
well-publicized statement and turn it into many conversations with folks
who need to be educated. We need to share that story on Facebook and
Twitter for all of our friends to see. We must send letter, and emails, and
make phone calls, and continue to use our time and energy to break down the
barriers of misinformation that keeps our plant from its righteous place in
our daily lives.
It is the little things that will end this thing. It is great that there
are big picture things happening to be a part of. But the ground game
happens every day in your normal life patterns. That is where we reach
those who just need a little encouragement, or some knowledge, to get their
support for the cause. Those folks will not be at the rally and may not see
the protest on TV; but they know YOU and they respect your opinion. Use
that influence to make a case for the cause.
They say weedheads are about 10-15% of the population. That means if all of
us made a commitment to talk to ten of our neighbors, we could reach
everyone in America with a message of cannabis freedom. Do those little
things today. Track down a stranger and tell them why weed is awesome. Buy
a cool weed shirt and start a conversation. Put an end the drug war sticker
on your car. Write an email for weed. Make a phone call for weed. If we all
do one little thing a day we can end this thing tomorrow. DO IT!

Sacramento City Council will be having a hearing this Tuesday Oct 16th at
6pm in order to give staff direction on whether or not to end a patients'
right to cultivate outdoors. Also the staff will be given direction on
amending the city's code on location requirements for dispensing
collectives.
Please ask the City Council to support patient's rights to grow and give
local collectives a chance to reopen by changing the distance requirements
from residential zones. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!!
